Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Sue Gouse has moved frequently throughout the United States, has also lived in Mexico, and finally settled in Savannah, Georgia. Much of her inspiration for her oil paintings comes from her travels, with special emphasis on the beach and the mountains. Sue believes life, along with her ability to paint, is a gift from God, and her palette reflects her love of beauty in vivid color.

She enjoyed a long career in clinical nursing after graduating from Duke University. She is married to Dr. John Gouse, has raised five children, and is the proud grandmother of five, another source of painting subjects!

After much creative work of all kinds, especially in home decorating (several of her homes have been featured in magazines), gardening, and sewing, Sue became an oil painter, studying under Velda Lovell in Cashiers, North Carolina. She has subsequently taken instruction from Marcos Blahove of Tybee Island, Georgia, Paul Lucchasi of New York City, Bob Rohm of Flower Mound, Texas, Joann Williams-Walker of Panama City, Florida, Julie Hanson of Sarasota, Florida, and Julyan Davis of Ashville, NC.

Laurel Magazine of Highlands, North Carolina featured Sue's work on the cover of their September, 2006 issue. An honorable mention was awarded to Sue at the Savannah Garden Exposition 2006, and she was awarded Second Prize for “Golden Field” in Savannah Art Association’s juried show “Enlightened” 2009. Jurors at the “Charlotte Festival in the Park 2010” gave Sue a merit award. Her donated Hospice painting was juried into the Savannah Telfair’s Jepson Museum show in 2010. She has been juried into several fine art shows, including “Open Art” at the Telfair Art Fair and the annual juried art show at The Bascom, Highlands, NC. She has exhibited at the Trillium Links and Lake Club, The Bascom, The Savannah Harbor Club, Trends and Traditions, The JEA, the Landings Plantation Club and Company, Merrill Lynch, and Espresso Gallery. In Savannah, her work is sold at her Studio/Gallery 9 in City Market, Soho South Gallery Cafe, Westin Savannah Harbor Resort, Eclectibles, The Cottage Shop, Byrd Cookie Company, and Polka Dots. She also exhibits at Atlantic Beacon Gallery on Tybee Island, 37th@Abercorn Antiques & Design and the Savannah Airport. Sue's gicleés decorate the walls of the United Community Bank on the Southside, and The Weed Building in Savannah. Her painting, “Red Chairs”, was selected for the cover of the book, “Two, Please!”

Savannah's Favorite Local Art Gallery in City Market

Here I can keep you up to date with my show schedule, special sales, new works, gallery news and other happenings.

A little bit about my art career: After a long nursing career while raising 5 children, I discovered I have a passion for oilpainting.  My home town of Savannah, GA provides constant inspiration for painting the city, the low country, and the ocean. My frequent trips to the mountains of North Carolina result in many paintings depicting the mountain life. So, I am blessed to be able to paint both the coast and the mountains! I think God made a beautiful world, which I cannot improve upon, but I enjoy the challenge of documenting the surroundings of my life.

All original oil painting images are labeled with the size of the canvas, without a frame.  If you purchase an original painting, the 2 to 3 inch frame is included in the price, and increases the overall size of the piece.  If an original painting is sold, giclee reproductions (prints) on canvas or fine art paper are usually available in multiple sizes, including large format.  The artist will frame canvas giclee in a choice of color, while the fine art paper giclees are framed by the buyer.   In addition, I sell tempered glass cutting boards/hotplates, packages of 6 different themed note cards, and sets of 4 placemats with her images on them.  Note cards can be personalized for businesses, Christmas cards, or special occasions.

My work is exhibited and sold in galleries in Savannah, Tybee Island and Cashiers, NC.  I am happy to work with you to paint a commission for you, or make canvas or paper giclee prints in whatever size you may need.  Please contact me at 912-667-4378 ( This email address is being protected from spambots. Thanks for visiting!  Artfully, Sue
